Dato' Onn Jaafar lead the protest to Malayan Union
Now everyone, let’s find out why Malay
oppose Malayan Union. Basically there are four reasons why they are not agreed
and oppose Malayan union. The first one is the elimination of the sovereignty
and authority of the Malay ruler or Raja-raja Melayu. As an illustration, denying
the Sultanate as the highest Malay rulers. Thus, this situation will make the Malay
ruler as the one who loss throne and dignity as a protector of the Malays. Plus,
the collection of Zakat also is under the authority of the British Governor. Thus,
these situations seem that Malay Rulers Council member without any power at all.
The Malay claim the right
The second reason why Malay did not
agree with Malayan Union is because they worry that the Malay civilization
might be eroded. This is because the system of monarchy, the Malay language and
Jawi script will not practice or not use anymore. These situations challenge
the Malay supremacy. Thus, the Malay
concern and anxious they might lose their identity and their motherland. Apart from
that, the Malay also not satisfies with the liberal nationality as offer by the
British in Malayan Union. This is because Jus soli citizenship status quo
threatens the indigenous Malays as the number of Malays to be small due to the
influx of immigrants.
The opposition of Malayan Union
The last one why Malay opposes Malayan
Union is because; they don’t like with the way sir Sir Harold Mac Michael get
the signature of the Malay ruler to make Malayan Union the real one. He, threaten
to lowering the Malay rulers from the throne if they did not accept the Malayan
Union. Malay Rulers also were not given enough time to consult with the Council
of State or his advisers as happened to the Sultan of Perak. Thus, all of these
situations strengthen the bond between the Malay to oppose Malayan Union.
